  21.             * DIRECTX 6.0 Installer
  22.             -- IMPORTANT NOTE: DirectX is required (Windows 95/98) for the game 
  23.             demo to run. The LAUNCH setup program will run the DirectX installer 
  24.             if DirectX is not detected on your system. For best results, make 
  25.             sure you have the latest videocard and soundcard drivers from the 
  26.             appropriate manufacturers.

  34.             1. Tips 
  35.                 Switch to High Color (16-bit) or True Color display mode for 
  36.                 best-looking graphics and video. (go to Control Panels / Display 
  37.                 / Settings tab / Color palette) 
  38.                 Connect to your internet provider before running LAUNCH for 
  39.                 content off the web. Be sure to have Microsoft Internet Explorer 
  40.                 3 (or higher) installed [http://www.microsoft.com/ie]. 
  41.                 Multitasking is not recommended. (Quit other applications before 
  42.                 running LAUNCH for best performance)

  46.             2. Startup Problems
  47.             * Nothing appears when CD is put into drive
  48.                 Autoplay may be turned off on your computer. In this case, 
  49.                 please go to "My Computer" and double-click on the LAUNCH CD-ROM 
  50.                 icon and run "Setup.exe". In rare cases, the Autoplay screen may 
  51.                 be glitched or fail to load. Make sure you have the latest 
  52.                 Windows video drivers for your specific video card if this is 
  53.                 the case. These can usually be downloaded from the 
  54.                 manufacturer's website.
  55.             * "IOS failed to initilize" error message after installation
  56.                 This is a rare problem which may occur on early versions of 
  57.                 Windows 95. Solution from Microsoft support:
  58.                 
  59.                 1. Boot Windows 95 in Safe mode or to a command prompt.
  60.                 2. Perform one of the following two steps: 
  61.                  - Edit the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files and disable any
  62.                    references to Smartdrv.exe. To disable a line, type "rem"
  63.                    (without quotation marks) at the beginning of the line.
  64.  
  65.                  - Rename Smartdrv.exe to another name.
  66.                 3. Restart your computer normally. 
  67.             * Slow Load Time
  68.                 Minimum system requirements have increased slightly starting 
  69.                 with issue 15. Slow load times can be caused by a number of 
  70.                 factors or combinations of system components. Surpassing the 
  71.                 following suggested system requirements (particularly RAM) will 
  72.                 improve performance of LAUNCH. If your computer is near the 
  73.                 minimum requirements, LAUNCH should play but load times may be 
  74.                 slow.
  75.                 
  76.                 If you receive a "Cannot open START.DXR" or something similar 
  77.                 when starting up LAUNCH, most likely a component on your system 
  78.                 falls below the minimum requirement.
  79.             * Suggested System Requirements *
  80.                 Windows 95/98
  81.                 Pentium 166
  82.                 24 MB RAM
  83.                 4X+ CD-ROM drive
  84.                 16-bit soundcard
  85.                 
  86.                 For the smoothest LAUNCH experience, a Pentium II-class 
  87.                 computer, 32 MB RAM, and a 24X CD-ROM drive are highly 
  88.                 suggested.
  89.             * Installation / Quicktime 3.0
  90.                 * If you get a system error or general protection fault while 
  91.                 running the installer,
  92.                 1) turn off any antivirus software you may have running.
  93.                 2) delete all files in your C:\Windows\Temp directory and try 
  94.                 again.
  95.                 
  96.                 Unfortunately, Quicktime 3.0 is not backwards compatible, but it 
  97.                 is ok to also have both 16-bit and 32-bit versions of Quicktime 
  98.                 on your system. They have been designed to coexist on the same 
  99.                 system with no conflicts.
  100.                 
  101.                 Older versions of LAUNCH require older versions of Quicktime:
  102.                 LAUNCH 1 - 14:Quicktime 2.1.2 (16-bit)
  103.                             LAUNCH 15 - 19:Quicktime 2.1.2 (32-bit)
  104.                             LAUNCH 20+ :Quicktime 3.0
  105.                     
  106.                 Note: A Quicktime for Windows program group will be created.You 
  107.                 don't need any of these files to access LAUNCH. These icons are 
  108.                 just there as part of the Quicktime installation program and may 
  109.                 be used to run Quicktime movies externally, such as ones that 
  110.                 are downloaded from the internet.
  111.                 
  112.                 Due to a problem with detecting Quicktime, LAUNCH #20 will only 
  113.                 work with Quicktime 3.0 and 3.01. All other issues should work 
  114.                 with any version of Quicktime 3. If you have 3.02 on your system 
  115.                 and would like to run #20, you'll have to delete the file 
  116.                 c:\windows\system\quicktime.qts and run the Quicktime installer 
  117.                 from issue #20. After viewing issue #20, you can reinstall 
  118.                 Quicktime 3.02 if you wish by running the installer (included 
  119.                 starting with issue #22). We apologize for this inconvenience.
  120.             * General Errors
  121.                 LAUNCH does not install anything on your system (Windows 95 or 
  122.                 later) besides Quicktime and ActiveX Controls, all content is 
  123.                 run off the CD.
  124.                 * Get the latest video drivers from your video cards 
  125.                 manufacturer, especially if you have an ATI video card (Windows 
  126.                 95/98, Mac).
  127.                 * Downloaded files and some temporary files are stored in the 
  128.                 C:\Windows\Lnchprfs directory, please delete these if you are 
  129.                 getting errors running LAUNCH or would like to recover the hard 
  130.                 disk space.
  131.                 * Re-installing Quicktime may also fix other errors. 
  132.

  135.             3. Audio/video problems
  136.             * Color mode/palette
  137.                 LAUNCH is optimized for Windows 95/98, videocard at 16-bit color 
  138.                 setting.
  139.                 * Windows 95/98 -- To run in 16-bit color, your video card 
  140.                 setting must be set to that color bit-depth. The ways to switch 
  141.                 color bit-depths vary from computer to computer, usually it is a 
  142.                 control panel installed along with the video card. In Windows 
  143.                 95/98, go to:
  144.                 
  145.                 Control Panel -> Display -> Settings and change the color 
  146.                 palette setting to High Color (16 bit).
  147.             * Video glitches during playback
  148.                 * Go to Control Panel -> Quicktime -> Video Settings and switch 
  149.                 from Options mode to Safe Mode. Updated video drivers from the 
  150.                 video card manufacturer may be required.
  151.                 
  152.             * No sound in LAUNCH / general audio problems
  153.                 1. Make sure WAV volume is turned up in your mixer (Windows 
  154.                 95/98 - double-click on the speaker in the bottom right hand 
  155.                 corner of the screen) and that you can play .WAV audio (you 
  156.                 should be able to hear previews in the Sounds control panel).
  157.                 
  158.                 2. Make sure you have the latest sound drivers from the 
  159.                 manufacturer of your soundcard installed. Usually they can be 
  160.                 downloaded from the manufacturer's website.
  161.                 
  162.                 3. You may get better results with sound in LAUNCH by going to 
  163.                 Control Panel -> Quicktime -> Sound Out and switching from 
  164.                 DirectSound to waveOut.
  165.                 
  166.                 4. There may be a conflict between the Quicktime music 
  167.                 synthesizer and the soundcard's software wavetable emulation. To 
  168.                 remove the Quicktime music synthesizer, go to Control Panel -> 
  169.                 Quicktime -> Music -> Edit List -> Synthesizer. Choose "No 
  170.                 synthesizer" in the synthesizer list.
  171.                 
  172.                 5. Soundcards with software wavetable emulation [most cards do 
  173.                 NOT have this feature] may cause Quicktime audio sync problems. 
  174.                 Please turn off this feature to see if it is causing the 
  175.                 problem. This can be done usually in a soundcard specific 
  176.                 control panel or go to Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager 
  177.                 -> Sound, Video and Game Controllers and disable this option 
  178.                 from there.
